Meanwhile the tubular ways require a lot of cleaning. This is thick, tarry oil that is not supposed to harden but has. It is mostly the mineral oil/vegetable oil mix that I use on spurtles and spatulas as well as other items. Over time it drips on the lathe and hardens. the tubular ways require a lot of cleaning
Elbow grease, 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper, and WD40 get the grunge taken off. I am not worried about discolouration, just that the tool rest and the tailstock move easily up and down the wave. Elbow grease, 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper, and WD40 get the grunge taken off
Similarly, I cleaned up the ways on the big Craftsman. This is the time to ensure that rust is cleared up and prevented. I like Rust Check in the red can to prevent rust. It also ensures a smooth movement along the ways for the tool rest and tailstock. cleaned up the ways on the big Craftsman
