This is a carver's stand I made some years ago. You sit on the pad to hold it in place and use a carver's screw to hold the piece to the top pad.

The adjustments top and bottom allow for incredible ease of movement and holding ability for carving in the round.

Very quickly a box of short spindles gets collected. I am defining short spindles as those which will fit the shorter dimension of the box. Totally arbitrary but I have to start somewhere.
