Cleaning the Workshop - Page 20

Burls can make up for cracked wood.

I have decided to remove the wood from this movable cart and then use it to hold the wet wood while the rest goes to box or table. The cart once held a television back in the day when the things were huge so it can handle a bit of weight. I have decided to remove the wood from this movable cart
This is interesting. What we have here is a block of maple, suitable now for small pieces or firewood. Wood moves and this has moved a lot, hence the cracks. Wood moves and this has moved a lot
This crack has moved all the way down the block. all the way down the block of wood
And into the other end. If I had cut away the center of the log better, it would likely not have split so badly. cut away the center of the log bette
Another interesting piece. This one is a pin cherry burl. We have over 50 species of pin cherry in Nova Scotia but they all look the same. They are also subject to black knot so they do not get really big, but they do burl. pin cherry burl
Looking at it from this angle you can see how the grain is burled on one side of the crotch. When I turn it I will have to decide if I want to turn the whole piece and contrast the regular grain with the burled, or run it through the band saw and have half with crotch pattern and half with burl? the grain is burled on one side of the crotch
