This is interesting. What we have here is a block of maple, suitable now for small pieces or firewood. Wood moves and this has moved a lot, hence the cracks.

And into the other end. If I had cut away the center of the log better, it would likely not have split so badly.

Another interesting piece. This one is a pin cherry burl. We have over 50 species of pin cherry in Nova Scotia but they all look the same. They are also subject to black knot so they do not get really big, but they do burl.

Looking at it from this angle you can see how the grain is burled on one side of the crotch. When I turn it I will have to decide if I want to turn the whole piece and contrast the regular grain with the burled, or run it through the band saw and have half with crotch pattern and half with burl?
