Return your piece to the lathe, replace the tail stock and snug things up.

While holding the ferrule in your left hand, use the parting tool in the right to make gentle cuts and fit the ferrule over the tenon. Ease it on from right to left. A very snug fit is possible.

Because you have cut the section a bit larger than the diameter of the ferrule there is a ridge of wood left just to the left of it.

This will be required to either be rounded off or to be blended into the ferrule. A sharp corner is unpleasant when the awl is used.

In this case, refine the curve with your skew or gouge to just touch the ferrule edge. This is one of the finishing touches that make the tool a pleasure to use. Copper is soft and the turning tool can cut it with safety, so the blend can be very smooth.
