Woodturning Project: Beginner : Awl

Wood Turning an Awl (2)

Use your ferrule to measure for the last line. It may be longer than 1/4". The measurements are not crucial but it is good to learn to cut to a plan. Ferrules cut from pipe are seldom accurate for length and you may prefer a longer or shorter one anyway. As often as possible it is better to mark directly off a piece rather than from a measurement. wood turning project awl: marking out
Part in to the waste wood to the left of the first line. 3/8" to 1/2" is plenty of wood to hold the piece securely. wood turning project awl: measuring diameter
Round the left end down like a bead. Really, that is what this is, the left side of a bead. woodturning project awl: cutting to diameter
The two lines together are decorative indicators. Either simply notch each one with a "V" cut and place another 1/8" to the right or, as I am doing here, woodworking lathe exercise: preparing for ferrule
form a bead. beginning of technique
