The piece is now in a faceplate, wooden cone, foam pad, turning piece, tail center sandwich. Take the time to make sure the piece is centered. I mark the center of the base before removing the faceplate. This makes centering much easier.

I start taking the waste wood off the base. Mostly I am following the screw holes down so they will not be seen in the finished piece.

|
Continuing to follow the screw holes down I leave some meat around the center. Partly this is for support while turning but it is also to leave design options as I go. I will remove some and take a look and repeat as I proceed to design on the go.

The screw holes are about gone. There is work to do in refining the curve from center to the edge of the turning. Note that there is a fair tenon left for design decisions.

While the center is reduced leaving a support cone, the center to side lines are subtly worked upon.
