Getting it on the lathe

Looking for the largest section to turn, I use a series of circles cut from cardboard and find that the 7" one is the best for this piece. It is always possible to turn a large piece smaller. I have adjusted the circle near the top of the piece as I think the grain lines will be stronger here. Looking for the largest section to turn, I use a series of circles cut from cardboard
A rough circle with a marker is sufficient for cutting with the chain saw. My lathe is large enough to handle this piece without knocking off the corners but it is always nicer to start with the best balanced wood. There will be enough balance problems with the grain changing densities. A rough circle with a marker is sufficient for cutting with the chain saw.

Mounting the faceplate as close to center as possible does not necessarily mean mounting it in the center of the chain saw cut. I use #14 3/4" metal screws for the 3" face plate Mounting the faceplate as close to center as possible
The blank is mounted with the face plate and the tail stock is brought up for extra support. It is likely not needed but sometimes overkill is vastly underrated. I hate losing wood and especially having it attack me. The blank is mounted with the face plate and the tail stock is brought up for extra support
With the rough turning done the colors and grain are starting to be evident. With the rough turning done the colors and grain are starting to be evident.
