Similarly to turning a hollow form the tenon on the bottom is turned away to a nub and removed with a sharp chisel.

The tenon is reduced and it is time to remove it. If you are not going to power sand the bottom you may wish to sand the bottom now and leave yourself as little hand sanding as possible.

 You do not  want to snap off the tenon

You do not want to snap off the tenon as it will undoubtedly tear some of the grain away with it. Instead I bring up a very sharp carpenter's chisel, bevel down, lathe off. I gently turn the lathe by hand, levering the chisel into the tenon.
