I attach a scrap piece of birch to a small face plate and turn it to a tapered, round headed cone. The fit is tested to be sure it fits inside the vase.

A piece of fun foam from the hobby section of the Dollar Store will protect the interior of the vase when it is involved in the turning of the base.

The piece is mounted on the taper and the tail stock brought up to the mark that was made on the base.

The crack on the base is marked in felt pen so as not to miss its placement.

I begin to shape the base.
